- I am not sure what this proves about being able to translate works
- very rooted in one language or culture. My understanding is that the
- translation from French to English is not all that faithful. For
- example, the names of the characters, apart from Asterix and Obelix,
- dont translate literally. I believe that the general sense of the
- story is followed but the translators add puns, english idioms, and so
- on to the dialogs. I was once talking to a bilingual british
- gentleman in a book show in London(UK!) who told me that Asterix in
- the original french is MUCH funnier because of the topical satire and
- idiomatic word-play that it contains.
-
- Indeed, translation from English to American is not necessarily
- one-to-one! The American edition of 'Asterix and the Great Crossing'
- changes character names and some dialog also, to make it 'funnier' to
- American readers.
-
- The English translators are, if memory serves, Derek Bell and Anthea
- Hockbridge.
-
- Finally, since the Asterix comics have come up, as it were, does
- anybody have opinions on why these are not so popular in the USA? I
- have shared a couple of these with some American friends. Without
- exception they have been returned to me with the comment 'weird'! A
- french friend of mine here has also had similar experiences.
