  22. I was rather dissapointed in the choice of the actress 
  23. who played
  24. Madeline Basset. To the best of my
  25. knowledge, the Basset was supposed to have a great 
  26. profile. In fact I recall Bertie talking very flatteringly
  27. about her looks (something 
  28. about the outer crust, etc.) The recent version on PBS
  29. did not do her justice.

  31. In fact I think, all the women characters were 
  32. portrayed very badly. Particularly, Stephanie Byng.
  33. The dramatisation made her out to be a monster.
  34. According to The Book, she is a flighty
  35. high spirited girl, who distributes
  36. soup to the needy. That was nowhere to be seen.
  37. I know this is picking straws. But I think it
  38. proves a contention that Wodehouse
  39. is untranslatable to the screen.  
  40. How do you shoot a "nugget" like-
  41. "There was a lot of mud on the constable's face,
  42. but not enough to hide his wounded expression", 
  43. onto the cinema/TV screen?
