- As for the Mulliner story where the hero is chased by a mob (led
- ominously by a man wielding a pitchfork), it's THE COMING OF GEORGE
- and our hero is George Mulliner ("Meet Mr. Mulliner")
-
- George loves his girl as much as his crossword puzzle, though he
- has the unfortunate handicap of stuttering when he tries to speak. His
- imaginative doctor suggests that he `sing it' (`Sing it?' `Sing it!')
- as a sure cure for his problem.
-
- Unfortunately, a rather tuneful conversation with a white-faced lady
- in a train causes our hero to be mistaken for a escapee from the local
- asylum, and as a result the whole town chases him across many
- districts (led, of course, by the Pitchfork man - George detested
- them all, but he especially detested the man with the Pitchfork).
-
- Mr. Mulliner (who relates this story) remarks that he, George, ran
- so fast and sure, that a speeding rabbit who happened to see him
- shrugged its shoulders helplessly and went away...
