  14. I read some Tom Robbins books shortly after reading some things by
  15. John Fowles (English novelist), and although there are pretty major
  16. differences in style (Fowles is more calculating, more `cleverly'
  17. twisted and less emotional), there are some obvious connections that
  18. might follow on a bit from the conversation about metafiction that
  19. appeared here a while back.  Both of them appear in their own books
  20. (TR in Cowgirls, Fowles -- in a more omnipotent and mysterious form --
  21. in `The French Lieutenant's Woman'); both feature appearances of their
  22. own books in their stories, generally incidentally.  John Fowles has
  23. `The Magus' being read by a character in `The Ebony Tower'; the
  24. question is:

  28. I'm sure it happens somewhere.

  30. Following on another old thread, that of favourite other authors and
  31. musicians, my authors of preference would probably be William Gibson,
  32. Dostoyevsky and Dorothy Dunnett, and musical thingummijigs would be
  33. the Sisters of Mercy, New Model Army, Mahler (on a good day), and
  34. Nielsen's 5th symphony.  The problem is, it seems a bit odd to me that
  35. someone should have William Gibson, the Sisters and Tom Robbins in
  36. their preferred list.  It's a bit like the idea of having a TR
  37. newsgroup -- an intrusion of technology.  Any comments on that?
