- Plant has stated that Old English myths were floating around in his head
- while Page and Jones were working out the song on acoustic guitar, recorder,
- and keyboard. He claims to have suddenly looked down in surprise to see that
- he had written, in a flash of inspiration, "There's a lady who's sure all that
- glitters is gold, and she's buying a stairway to heaven." No mention of any
- kind of Tolkien influence has ever been mentioned by the band or its many
- biographers in reference to this song.
