- Gems of many kinds seem to play an important role in Middle Earth:
- the arkenstone, the silmarils, the green elfstones that were left at
- the ford and that Aragorn wore, the red/blue/white stones in the
- Three rings...and the lack of a stone in the One Ring.

- These stones appear to be symbols of permanence -- sometimes bad,
- sometimes good -- especially the white ones. Has anyone examined
- the place of rocks in JRRT?
