  13. Gems of many kinds seem to play an important role in Middle Earth:
  14. the arkenstone, the silmarils, the green elfstones that were left at
  15. the ford and that Aragorn wore, the red/blue/white stones in the
  16. Three rings...and the lack of a stone in the One Ring.

  18. These stones appear to be symbols of permanence -- sometimes bad,
  19. sometimes good -- especially the white ones.  Has anyone examined
  20. the place of rocks in JRRT?
