- Tolkien isn't entirely consistent here, or clear, especially
- with respect to the elves who do seem to choose evil on rare occaisions
- (Kinslayings, people?) But he is clear in one part of the Silmarilion:
- the Gift of Men was to be able to break Doom and do things not encompassed
- by the Music of the Ainur. Because Eru knew many men would not use this
- power wisely he ordained that they would not live long and that their souls
- would leave Ea, not remain in it like elves or Ainur. This 'final death'
- was itself regarded as a great gift by the Immortals later on, when they were
- weary of the world.
