- Maybe some groups did, but all I ever saw was a universal (by women's groups,
- too!) outcry against Packwood. Perhaps we read different newspapers.

- An admirable position. [*cough* iran-contra *cough* >:-)]

-
- I say that by Zoe Baird withdrawing we have the right thing but for the
- wrong reasons. The immigration law stuff is wrong, true, but fairly trivial.
- If anything it's more a symptom than an actual disease. Baird is a
- corporate lawyer who has come down on the side of gigantic corporations
- against the people lots of times (the most annoying incident that comes to
- mind is her arguing against the whistleblower law, which is an absolutely
- brilliant device for knocking some sense into assorted scummy defense
- contractors who regularily overcharge the government for shoddy service.
- Of course, it goes without saying that the Reagan/Bush Justice Departments
- fought tooth and nail against it, but I digress.)
-
- Er, anyway, Baird's actual positions just aren't that great. So it's a good
- thing that she's gone and --
-
- >> Bill's next nominee will not be as conservative as Zoe Baird...
-
- Good. I've had my fill of conservative AGs. Now that we've finally gotten
- a Democrat into the White House we shouldn't have to put up with them any
- more.
-
- >I think (as one of Rush's callers theorized) that Clinton -knew- that Baird

- >conservatism in the cabinet, so people wouldn't think he was a liberal. He
- >never intended for someone like Zoe Baird to be attorney general. He just
- >wants you to think he did. Ingenious little ploy of his.
-
- Brilliant conspiracy theorizing! Almost as clever as the Liberal Media
- Conspiracy. I'd say that if Clinton could come up with and put into
- operation a plan as Machiavellian as that and watch it come off perfectly --
- well, the man must be an unparalleled political genius! Wouldn't you agree? :-)
-
- It's a pity though. Our next AG won't have a really cool name like "Zoe".
- Not only that, but _Doonesbury_ is going to have to do some hasty replotting
- now (character Joanie Caucus has just been hired by her old law-school
- friend Zoe Baird to work at Justice... may need some revision now...)
