- This is a serious post, unfortunately, but I'll write it anyway. :)
- Okay...
- John K. is a great cartoonist, but he's also an innovator of
- cartoons--a revolutionist even, the same way Samuel Beckett and
- Eugene Ionesco revolutionized the theatre. Certainly their works are
- alike. John K., like Ionesco, doesn't so much try to entertain us
- as shock us. And, like Ionesco, he does it by stripping realism and
- humanity from his cartoons, making "anti-cartoons" or "cartoons of
- the absurd," which attack ordinary cartoons and real life along with
- it by populating them with cliche-spitting automatons like the married
- couple in "Rubber Nipples" and deranged psychotics like Ren and the
- cowboys, through cruel, senseless plots and action, and cliche-filled
- mockeries of normal dialogue.
- Certainly Ren and Stimpy's world is an abstract, cruel, absurd
- universe where nothing makes sense--the world of Sartre, Camus,
- Beckett and Ionesco. The characters resemble the inhabitants of
- the absurd: the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Martin from _The Bald
- Soprano,_ who talk stilted cliches; Ren and Stimpy themselves are
- much like Didi and Gogo from _Waiting For Godot,_ two guys who
- somehow manage to keep each other alive in a meaningless world
- of mindless forces that sweep them along. Even the obsession with
- bodily functions is right out of Alfred Jarry's _Ubu Rex_, where Pere
- Ubu
- is a money-grubber much like Ren.
- English majors, theatre buffs, whoever cares to respond! Any
- comments? (Might make a good paper for English, if I can get my teacher
- to let me do it! :) )
