- Ok, I have a few thoughts to add to those of Falryx and the others about
- muse destinies..
- First, I am only a member of Dragonsfire among the Pern muses so the
- experiences I relate are based therein. Now, I am a holder, and I
- personally try to come up with a unique 'project', or job if you will, for
- each of my residents. I believe this has several advantages; primarily it
- keeps the residents entertained, at least to an extent. Most residents of
- the major holds are just that- residents. They have no IC duties, they
- exist only to socialize and prepare for their day as a candidate.
- Obviously, this is a harder task at a hold with 20 residents than a
- smaller, newer hold like mine, but I've talked with several people on the
- muse, and I feel perfectly justified in not accepting new residents if I
- dont have something for them to do.
- Above and beyond all this, I think there is a far more pertinent reason
- why Hold life just doesnt exist as a career for many players. Not only
- does any new player want a dragon, but most of the old ones already have
- one. I think it sets an example to see that most of the Lord Holders, a
- position which should be satisfying by itself, also have rider characters.
- Offhand, I can think of only one other Lord/Lady Holder, or even minor
- holder on DF that does NOT have a rider character besides myself. So, how
- can you expect a newbie to believe that weyrs are not the ultimate goal of
- a muse when obviously the non-weyr folk attempt to get in on the
- dragon-action too?
-
- Ok, you might argue that a newbie wouldnt know about all the double
- characters, but that isn't my point. My point is similar to Falryx's
- original point, and so I pose this question to all you Lord Holders and
- Craftmasters out there on any mus*.... What is so necessary about being a
- rider, that your craft/hold position isn't enough?
- After all....
- Think about how many of the actual books were written with a rider as the
- main character... only about half. So then why doesnt anyone want to be a
- simple harper girl? Or even a trader?
