- McArthur Park is the worst song of all time??? Get real...Lyrically it's
- no Seventh Wonder (for years, I wondered if Jimmy Webb--author of the
- song--had meant anything by these seemingly obtuse lyrics; I then read
- an interview where he claimed that, no, there was no real meaning). But
- the lyrics are certainly no worse than those in any of dozens of
- well known songs (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" anyone? Or seemingly
- any early REM song; I say seemingly since you can only guess at what
- Michael Stipe is singing in those songs anyway). And from a poetic
- standpoint, they're more than a little better than those in gazillions
- of novelty songs over the years (Pa pa ooh mow mow?)
-
- Musically, it's something of a MOR tour-de-force. It's a pretty, and pretty
- complex, pop piece, with a number of good themes.
-
- I suppose the drama of the music (and Richard Harris' impassioned
- vocals on the original hit) imparts an importance to the lyrics that
- is not rewarded by analysis. But does this make for the worst song of
- all time? Sheesh...
-
- I thought about replying to Dave's call for bad song nominations. But
- I figured it would just be another rehash of the old and tired obvious
- suspects. And from what I've seen (though I haven't read Dave's articles
- about this), it was. Oh well...
