  24. McArthur Park is the worst song of all time??? Get real...Lyrically it's
  25. no Seventh Wonder (for years, I wondered if Jimmy Webb--author of the 
  26. song--had meant anything by these seemingly obtuse lyrics; I then read
  27. an interview where he claimed that, no, there was no real meaning). But
  28. the lyrics are certainly no worse than those in any of dozens of
  29. well known songs (Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" anyone? Or seemingly
  30. any early REM song; I say seemingly since you can only guess at what
  31. Michael Stipe is singing in those songs anyway). And from a poetic
  32. standpoint, they're more than a little better than those in gazillions
  33. of novelty songs over the years (Pa pa ooh mow mow?)

  35. Musically, it's something of a MOR tour-de-force. It's a pretty, and pretty
  36. complex, pop piece, with a number of good themes.

  38. I suppose the drama of the music (and Richard Harris' impassioned
  39. vocals on the original hit) imparts an importance to the lyrics that
  40. is not rewarded by analysis. But does this make for the worst song of
  41. all time? Sheesh...

  43. I thought about replying to Dave's call for bad song nominations. But
  44. I figured it would just be another rehash of the old and tired obvious
  45. suspects. And from what I've seen (though I haven't read Dave's articles
  46. about this), it was. Oh well...
