- OKAY, so I was really lucky to have some of my bookseller friends smuggle me
- into one of their events at which Dave Barry spoke. This was last winter
- some time when he was on the book tour for the book prior to the Japan book,
- and the name of which I have forgotten at this time...Anyway, we were lucky
- to be favored with the following anecdote, which Dave prefaced with the
- famous "I am not making this up."
-
- Dave was on a press buss covering George Bush's campaign in 1988, and the
- press was informed that there would be an impromptu stop ("Unplanned
- impromptu campaign stop in 20 minutes...." over the P.A.)...anyway, George
- and the press got out at a construction site, and for a photo
- opportunity George proceeded to don a hard hat and get behind the controls
- of a piece of equipment known to insiders in the road business as a
- "vibrating pecker"--that is, a large vibrating thing like a giant drill bit
- that smacks up and down and breaks concrete apart. The actual operator was
- on the machine with him, assumably to keep him from doing any damage, but
- suddenly George started grabbing controls and the machine started smacking
- up and down, shaking the ground, raising an enormous amount of dust, and
- sending the accompanying reporters diving for cover. Finally the operator
- got the pecker turned off, and, and as George dismounted, he put his arm
- around the shoulders of the shaken operator and said, (Barry says he is NOT
- making this up) "This man taught me everything I know about vibrators."
-
- This is probably in a book somewhere, but I wanted to pass it along if it
- was not...
-
- barry on, dude! msi
