- First of all, let me say that I am one of Dave's BIGGEST FANS, so what
- follows applies ONLY to his Japan book...
-
- I read this book a few days ago, and I didn't think it was up to his usual
- standards either. It certainly wasn't one of the WORST books of the year,
- but it wasn't one of the BEST either. For one thing, he uses the phrase
- "I'm not making this up..." too many times. In most of his columns, he uses
- this once or twice, and then proceeds to followup on the fact he has
- introduced us to. In this book, he just gives us the facts and expects us
- to laugh... even people who have never been to Japan would know some of those
- "I'm not making this up..." stuff, so its neither surprising nor funny. I
- think he really did try to write a semiserious book (for example, the
- chapter on Hiroshima which has only 1/2 of a joke in it), but its one of those
- deals where if you try to do two things at once, you might not end up getting
- either of them done.... I don't think it was informative enough to be a
- guide to Japan, nor was it funny enough to be a laugh-out-loud comedy. This
- book gave me about 2 or fewer laughs per page... All of his other books
- generally average closer to 15-20... (and his columns even more). Sorry, Dave,
- this isn't one of your best works....
