- Heroin is derived from morphine. It is di-acetyl morphine and was first
- synthesized in the 1870's and marketed by Bauer in the 1890's.
- Morphine is extracted from opium (as is codeine) which is obtained from the
- opium poppy.
- Heroin is supposed to be several times more powerful as an analgesic than
- morphine (3 times or more) but it becomes morphine once it is in the body
- so its action is similar.
