  32. Heroin is  derived from morphine. It is di-acetyl morphine and was first
  33. synthesized in the 1870's and marketed by Bauer in the 1890's.
  34. Morphine is extracted from opium (as is codeine) which is obtained from the
  35. opium poppy.
  36. Heroin is supposed to be several times more powerful as an analgesic than 
  37. morphine (3 times or more) but it becomes morphine once it is in the body
  38. so its action is similar.
