  18. Not only criminals profit from the illegality of drugs.  Law enforcement
  19. agents and prosecuting attorneys benefit as well as the pharmaceutical
  20. industry.  Tobacco and alcohol companies also profit from the fact that
  21. pot, cocaine, and others are illegal, since the public will stay addicted to
  22. THEIR drugs.  It wouldn't surprise me if any of these groups would resort to
  23. violence to stop an effective politician who advocates the legalization of
  24. drugs.
