  24. Well, it is rather difficult to cleanly separate the codeine from the caffeine
  25. in your kitchen.   However, separating the caffeine and codeine from the aspirin
  26. (ASA to those of you living in countries that still respect Bayer's trademark).
  27. Aspirin is practically insoluble in cold water.  Codeine phosphate and caffeine are
  28. both quite soluble.  Simply dissolve the tablets in boiling water and allow to
  29. cool very slowly (over night).  The aspirin will crystalize out forming nice
  30. long needles leaving the codeine and caffeine behind in solution.

  32. While having twice as much caffeine as codeine may be a problem, think of it as 
  33. a built-in protection against addiction.  There is no way to increase the dose of
  34. codeine beyond a certain point without risking serious xanthine toxicity.
  35. Tolerance to opiates develops much more cleanly than to xanthines.

  37. Keep in mind that what I said applies only to ACC tables containing aspirin.
  38. Do not attempt this with tablets containing acetaminophen!  Acetaminophen is 
  39. quite a bit more soluble in water than aspirin.  Eating large quantities of 
  40. acetaminophen daily can cause *serious* renal and hepatic complications!
