- Well, it is rather difficult to cleanly separate the codeine from the caffeine
- in your kitchen. However, separating the caffeine and codeine from the aspirin
- (ASA to those of you living in countries that still respect Bayer's trademark).
- Aspirin is practically insoluble in cold water. Codeine phosphate and caffeine are
- both quite soluble. Simply dissolve the tablets in boiling water and allow to
- cool very slowly (over night). The aspirin will crystalize out forming nice
- long needles leaving the codeine and caffeine behind in solution.
-
- While having twice as much caffeine as codeine may be a problem, think of it as
- a built-in protection against addiction. There is no way to increase the dose of
- codeine beyond a certain point without risking serious xanthine toxicity.
- Tolerance to opiates develops much more cleanly than to xanthines.
-
- Keep in mind that what I said applies only to ACC tables containing aspirin.
- Do not attempt this with tablets containing acetaminophen! Acetaminophen is
- quite a bit more soluble in water than aspirin. Eating large quantities of
- acetaminophen daily can cause *serious* renal and hepatic complications!
