  20. A) Force an errant (by our definition) government of a specific country
  21.    to see the error of their ways and do it our way, or,

  23. B) Get the citizens of said specific country so mad at their government
  24.    for getting the sanctioning body pissed at them that they DO
  25.    something about unseating the government they currently have.

  27. Granted, people in the country being sanctioned, Iraq in this case, are
  28. suffering. Nearly as much as the people of Kuwait suffered while the
  29. Iraqi army was occupying their country. It's a sad fact that people DO
  30. suffer under sanctions. But I firmly believe that if NOTHING were done
  31. and the world were to sit back and "do unto others", as one non-violent
  32. person in this group recently advocated, then the toll in human lives
  33. and misery would eventually be much worse and more widespread.

  35. Remember WWII and a guy named Adolf. Isolationists preached the same
  36. posture then and we stood back and watched while Europe was swallowed up
  37. and millions killed. While there are some who will cringe at the
  38. comparison, the situation in Iraq isn't so different. Just substitute
  39. "Kurds" for "Jews". 
  40.  
  41. Remember, there's always a tin-plated dictator somewhere waiting for the
  42. rest of the world to get complacent and pacifistic. Somebody has to be
  43. ready to slap them down. Who else now has the muscle? _I_ sure as hell
  44. wish another country would stand up but in lieu of that unlikely event,
  45. we're elected, so to speak.
