-
- More precisely, the purpose of sanctions is to either
-
- A) Force an errant (by our definition) government of a specific country
- to see the error of their ways and do it our way, or,
-
- B) Get the citizens of said specific country so mad at their government
- for getting the sanctioning body pissed at them that they DO
- something about unseating the government they currently have.
-
- Granted, people in the country being sanctioned, Iraq in this case, are
- suffering. Nearly as much as the people of Kuwait suffered while the
- Iraqi army was occupying their country. It's a sad fact that people DO
- suffer under sanctions. But I firmly believe that if NOTHING were done
- and the world were to sit back and "do unto others", as one non-violent
- person in this group recently advocated, then the toll in human lives
- and misery would eventually be much worse and more widespread.
-
- Remember WWII and a guy named Adolf. Isolationists preached the same
- posture then and we stood back and watched while Europe was swallowed up
- and millions killed. While there are some who will cringe at the
- comparison, the situation in Iraq isn't so different. Just substitute
- "Kurds" for "Jews".
-
- Remember, there's always a tin-plated dictator somewhere waiting for the
- rest of the world to get complacent and pacifistic. Somebody has to be
- ready to slap them down. Who else now has the muscle? _I_ sure as hell
- wish another country would stand up but in lieu of that unlikely event,
- we're elected, so to speak.
