-
- In strict definition a "cordial" is a reviving, invigorating,
- refreshing drink. (Note the word derives from Latin "cordialis" or
- "the heart") However, it is most commonly used as a generic term
- for a sweetened, aromatic alcoholic drink (spirit). "Brandy
- Cordial" "Rum Cordial" etc.
-
- I believe the origin of the current common usage of the word is from
- old usage, deriving from the offering of a "welcome cup" (typically
- of a spiced spirit) to a weary traveller.
-
- Cut to: (An 18th century manor home).
- <Knock, Knock> on the massive front door.
- The door opens to reveal a tired, dusty traveller who has just
- arrived from an all-day horseback journey.
- The lord of the manor, looking concerned about his guest, presses
- a cup of spiced, hot brandy and cider into the weary hands of the
- newly-arrived traveler.
- "You must be weary and tired after your journey. Here, drink
- this. It'll brace you up."
-
- It should also be noted "cordial" is current usage to describe a
- sincere, and caring person, as does the phrase "cordiality" as a
- form of behavior.
