  16.     Last night my Cowfish died.  I MUST find out what happened.  This
  17. cowfish was like one of the family...

  19. Maybe you can help.  Quick background:
  20.  
  21. I've had my cowfish for over a year.  It has always come to my hand and
  22. eaten.  Just like a cow, the fish ate as much as it could get.  The fish
  23. has always seemed healthy.  
  24.  
  25. Well last night I happened to glance at the tank and noticed immediately
  26. that something was wrong with it.  The Cow fish was leaning about 30
  27. degrees and swimming with its horns out of the water acting obviously
  28. distressed.  It was also acting like it had to try real hard to maintain
  29. its swimming.  I tried to feed it but it did not eat (first time EVER),
  30. instead it kept swimming around in a delusioned/confused state.  The Cowfish
  31. had no visible marks on her other than a very small 1-2 mm brown mark
  32. on her nose.  This did not seem like any big deal and was definitely not 
  33. a cut.  All of her fins were at 100% (ie, nothing had attacked her).
  34. About one hour later I looked at the tank and the cow was motionless
  35. on the bottom.  A sad sight indeed (scared the daylights out of me!).
  36. This was something that happened very sudden because the day before the
  37. cowfish was a-ok acting...
  38.  
  39. I immediately tested the water quality:
  40. PH - 8.3
  41. Ammonia - 0.0
  42. Nitrites - 0.0
  43. Nitrates - 4ppm
  44. O2 levels were very high also
  45. Salinity - 1.20
  46. Temperature - 81 F
  47. Protein Skimmer & W/D filter were operating normally.

  49. It had been about a week since my last water change.  The only other 
  50. inhabitants were:

  52. Niger Trigger - Lived with the cow for about 6 months.  Never attacked
  53. the cowfish and is still swimming around as though there was nothing wrong.

  55. Saddle Back Clown - Lived with the cow for about 4 months.  Never had
  56. any problems and is still swimming around as though there was nothing
  57. wrong.

  59. Moray Eel - about 9 inches long, lived with the cow about 1.5 months.  This
  60. fish has never attacked any other fish and has never caused any problems.
  61. There is also nothing wrong with it.

  63. The only other thing that was different is that I added about 7 pounds of
  64. live rock to the tank one month ago.

  67. What would cause my cowfish only to die like that?  Why did it have to be
  68. my cow, why couldn't they have taken the trigger???  WHY WHY WHY!
