- parted on the platform at Friedrichstrasse, with the city spread out below
- us, and the steam from her eastbound express billowing around our feet.
- Hardly very romantic, I know; the train has taken so much of the poetry
- out of modern life.

- At Bauer the ever-efficient Achim was waiting to offer me a seat at our
- usual table almost before I had come to the door. And will the other lady
- be joining madam today? No she wouldn't. She might be half way to Saint
- Petersburg by now, for all I knew. The sight of her empty seat took the
- edge off even the disgustingly rich chocolate confection which I found I
- had ordered. And there was a military manequin in a plush-wallpaper and
- gold-braid uniform who was leering at me over his walrus face-fungus.
