- The alien arrived from a distant galaxy this week. God, what
- a scifi cliche', everyone thought; but there it was.
-
- Turned out their lot had had as much success at exceeding light speed
- as we had - a nice fat zero. So, this alien bod had been on his way
- for an awfully long time, salted away - or whatever the hell they used
- for life suspension - for a good two million years. It was the lone
- representative of its species, a solitary emissary from far, far away.
- Poor devil.
-
- Anyway, it spent its first conscious week decoding our language. We
- were anxious to communicate, at least because their technology looked
- interesting enough to be useful, except for the small detail that it
- seemed utterly incomprehensible. We needed the alien to let us into
- the secrets all right.
-
- Well, it got on its linguistic feet pretty sharpish, and the second
- week was spent in the inevitable celebrations, welcoming parades and
- interminable speeches and declararations of this, that and the other;
- you know, the usual thing. Then it died.
-
- It's a quirky old place, this universe. You gotta love it.
