- the local toys'r'us has an entire aisle devoted
- to the rampant proliferation of barbie dolls and
- their accessories. thousands of waspwaisted dolls,
- some molded in different colors of plastic, all with
- a variety of rayon hairdos, but each and every one of
- them with heavily mascaraed eyes and glow-red collagen
- stuffed lips.
-
- there is a vote barbie for president doll, whose dress
- would make snow white's depressingly dowdy and unfluffed.
- is it intended as a metaphor for the showyness needed to
- gain office these days?
-
- there is a limited edition series of barbies from around
- the (eec) world, separated from the boxed rabble and kept
- behind glass. the helpful info box on the English Barbie
- includes the following line:
- ``Although we speak English, some words are different than in America.''
-
- there was also a bunch of teen talk barbies on display, but
- none of them said ``math is hard''. i was almost disappointed.
- also seen were eco barbies (``animal lover barbie'', with little
- stuffed critters by their shoulders), office-girl barbies, ethnic
- barbies whose identities have a hollywood back-lot air about them.
-
- something that barbie has become over the years is a gauge of what
- middle america accepts in style and appearance. fashion is constantly
- changing and mattel must decide which of each year's fashions will make
- it big in the u.s. so as to anticipate demands. knowing this, i predict
- that the summer of 1993 will see the release of the slacker barbie, with
- fishnet hose, leather jacket and miniskirt all in black, pale skin, red
- dyed hair and gold loop through its cute little button nose.
-
- i was going to predict the crash-test barbie, but little boys have been
- doing that for years, usually without their sisters' permission...

- no neice of
- mine will ever
- receive a barbie
- doll from me.
