- I must confess I was apprehensive on my way to Casa Canetoad. How would
- these young whippersnappers react when they discovered my
- Secret Identity (tm) as mild-mannered Grandma Tomacina Boutell of
- 57 Waverly Street, Apple Pie, USA? Would they want to look at pictures
- of my grandchildren? Would they dance to strange music and behave
- in a morally reprehensible fashion? Would they vote for Democrats?
- (Now, now, I *know* Bill's a nice young man, but Babs is the
- patron saint of grandmothers everywhere.)
-
- I found the address and entered, slowly maneuvering my meatballs-and-
- spaghetti-fed bulk down the hallway. To my great relief, I was met at
- the door by a lovely old member of the Chelsea Rotary Club
- Grandmothers Auxiliary who introduced herself as "Larne."
-
- In short order I was introduced to Grandmas Annie, X, Grendel
- and Colette (sp), who offered me a seat and a cup of camomile, then
- proceeded to open their wallets and let drop with a long, long string
- of plastic portrait-folders.
-
- Dozens of other grandmothers arrived as the evening went on, but I
- could never keep their names straight.
-
- Later Grandma Grendel and I had a good-natured tussle over what
- to put on the ol' gramophone next. She wanted to keep listening
- to the "Mild Chili Nephews", but Colette and I were firmly in
- favor of "They Might Be Grandmas."
