- If your ancestors lived in the South at the time of the Civil War,
- you might wish to consult the "Official Military Atlas of the Civil
- War" (originally called the "Atlas to Accompany the Official Records
- of the Union and Confederate Armies"). Many of the maps made for the
- Union armies were very detailed, listing the names of the landowners
- along the roads. It may take some careful searching, but you may
- find your ancestors home.
-
- In my own case, one of my families lived near Lafayette GA, and
- their farm is noted on one of the maps prepared for Gen. Sherman's
- Atlanta campaign. I was able, with the aid of a modern map and
- a bit of guidance from present-day locals in Lafayette, to visit
- the vicinity of the farm.
-
- So, take a look. Even if you can't find your ancestors, many of the
- maps show the roads which can give you some ideas of migration routes.
