  18. WELCOME to sci.virtual-worlds.apps from your Principal Co-moderators,
  19. Bob Jacobson and Mark DeLoura.  In the next week we'll be putting the
  20. final touches on this new newsgroup; in the meantime, we thought you'd
  21. like to know more about it.

  24. UP UNTIL NEXT WEEKEND (JAN. 9-10).  WE RECOMMEND YOU WAIT UNTIL THEN

  27. We are pleased to invite you to a moderated discussion of virtual
  28. worlds technology as it is being applied today and will be applied
  29. tomorrow.

  31. This newsgroup is different from many of those on the USENET.
  32. sci.virtual-worlds.apps is designed as an online "magazine," with
  33. regular columns by selected individuals as well as daily submissions
  34. from the participants Regional Co-moderators will be keeping us up to
  35. date on developments around the world and specialists in applied
  36. technology will be posting regular commentaries on key trends and
  37. events, as they see them.  In this way we hope to provide you with an
  38. online experience that rewards the precious time you spend with us.
  39.  
  40. We'll be introducing our Regional Co-moderators over the next few
  41. weeks.  Currently, we are finalizing arrangements with prospective
  42. Regional Co-moderators from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia,
  43. Canada, the United States, Latin America, Britain, Italy, Germany, and
  44. Sweden.  If you are from somewhere else and would like to be a
  45. Regional Co-moderator, please send email to us in this regard.  We
  46. also welcome aspiring "domain specialists" who can report by
  47. industrial sectors.  Your postings generally will be classified by
  48. the field of industry/arts/education that they affect.
  49.  
  50. In the meantime, we have a couple of rules for this newsgroup that 
  51. we'd like to share with you:

  53.         1.  WE WILL BE POSTING ONLY MESSAGES ABOUT ACTUAL
  54.         APPLICATIONS, EITHER EXISTING OR IN THE WORKS (TO THE
  55.         BEST OF OUR INFORMATION).  Items about other issues
  56.         (philosophy, media treatment of virtual worlds, and all
  57.         manner of speculations about the future impact of this
  58.         technology, in a general sense) should continue to be sent
  59.         to sci.virtual-worlds.
  60.  
  61.         2.  When you post, please try to keep your messages tidy
  62.         (lines of fewer than 70 characters in length) and relevant.
  63.         If you're responding to another person's post, please be 
  64.         sure that the prior post is identified somewhere in your
  65.         message.  Also, although it's not required, do try to get 
  66.         your spelling correct and keep messages short:  
  67.         misspellings and messages over two pages in length will 
  68.         greatly diminish your readers.  (This has been proven!)
  69.  
  70.         Professor Greg Newby of the University of Illinois will
  71. continue his mailing list service for those of you who cannot access
  72. the USENET.  If you have problems with the mailing list, please send a
  73. message to Greg (gbnewby@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu); we cannot help you in this
  74. regard.
