  12. I recently read a post asking that a sci.math.graph group be started.

  14. I think that we should start several new newsgroups so that 
  15. one does not have to wade through many messages each day on 
  16. topics which are not of interest to us. Here are my suggestions:

  18. sci.math.beforecalculus  algebra, geometry,... which is learned
  19.                          before learning calculus
  20. sci.math.rec      recreational math
  21. sci.math.culture  all of the Nobel prize stuff could be psoted here
  22.                   and similar topics
  23. sci.math.number   number theory, Pi,Fermat's Last Thm,...
  24. sci.math.calculus calculus stuff
  25. sci.math.algebra  junior year math major (college) algebra 
  26. sci.math.analysis junior year math major analysis 
  27. sci.math.discrete combinatorics,graph theory,...
  28.  
  29. Please suggest others if I missed some. Perhaps reading the 
  30. FAQ to come up with an appropriate breakdown would be good.
  31. (No flames please if I missed some potential group names or 
  32. some interesting parts of math.)

  34. It seems to me that either 
  35. (a) the new newsgroups are not used very much (does not cost net much)
  36. (b) the net is used the same amount for postings , but you don't
  37.     have to even consider the ones which are irrelevant.
  38. (c) more postings occur in the specific areas OR
  39. (d) lots of cross posting occurs.

  41. (d) is bad (this costs the net more money, right?). I recommend that we keep 
  42. sci.math or start sci.math.misc
  43. and get on people's cases if they cross post too much.
  44.  
  45. All of the computer oriented news groups are broken up into multiple groups,
  46. this one should be also.
