  30.      I have been told by the author of a couple widely-used statistics
  31. texts ("widely-used" at the graduate level, which means something much
  32. different than a "widely-used" freshman calc book) that the amount of
  33. royalties an author receives is very small: so *very few* people buy
  34. such  a book, his royalties ran only about $300 per year.  He said
  35. that one wrote a book mainly because one felt the discipline needed it;
  36. and that writing a textbook was not particularly helpful toward tenure.
  37. Both his books seem to have begun as class notes.
