  14. WANTED:  Scientiststists  and  engineers  interested  in  corresponding  with 
  15. eighth graders  through  e-mail  to help answer  basic physical science
  16. questions.              
  17.        Just  think  how  exciting  it  would  be  for  a young  person  to
  18. communicate  with  an academic  professional  and  to  solve  real  life 
  19. science  problems  that  affect our  world  today!   So  many  youths  do 
  20. not  realize  the  importance  of  math  and science  or  are  intimidated
  21. by  the  complexities.   We need professionals like yourselves, with an open  
  22. mi nd and enthusiasm for teaching, to  help out students at  Peterson  Middle  
  23. School.  For  just  once  a   month, or however frequently you decide, you 
  24. can commu nicate with one or two students through  e-mail.
  25.         Nervous  about  talking  to  kids?   Don't  worry,  Bryan  Osborne,  
  26. the Peterson  Middle School  science  teacher,  will  provide  you  with  some
  27. helpful  guidelines  and  ideas that have  proved  very  successful  with
  28. past  volunteers.   His  "Helping  Hands" program  (corresponding  by 
  29. e-mail)  is  growing  rapidly  with  the  need  for  more volunteer 
  30. mentors  to  correspond with the  interested  students.
