  12. Recently, the Check Engine light came on unexpectedly for the
  13. sixth or so time (always seems to happen in parts of town where
  14. I REALLY don't want to stop).

  16. The car is a 1989 Nissan Sentra (it has an ECC), 1.6L I4 (12 valve)
  17. with a manual transmission and about 75000 miles.

  19. The problem is that when the light comes on, I pull over, check
  20. everything in reason (are the gauges still working - do they say 
  21. there is a problem, is there really oil in the engine still,
  22. is the filter on tight or did I lose it somewhere, are all the
  23. vacuum hoses still on right, is the throttle body still spritzing
  24. gas right, etc., etc. - everything I can think of to check with
  25. basically no tools).  I NEVER find anything obviously wrong.

  27. Here's the weird part - I get in the car and start limping to 
  28. the nearest offramp or whatever, and the light usually goes back
  29. out!  Two things to notice:  The engine is running fine the
  30. WHOLE time, and the light is NOT SUPPOSED TO GO OUT.

  32. I used to just think - "Oh, must of got some bad gas and the 
  33. ECC is upset at the amount of emissions - oh there, the light
  34. went out, the gunk must have burned up".  Then I looked in the
  35. Nissan Service Manual which basically shows that the computer
  36. (apparently) doesn't work that way - it is NOT supposed to
  37. reset until 50 start ups OR the code is cleared by digging the
  38. ECC out from under the seat and getting the fault code (which
  39. clears it too).

  41. So what's happening?  Beats me.  The thing I'm worried about 
  42. is that all this crying wolf is going to cause me to ignore
  43. that damn light once when I shouldn't.... I just don't TRUST
  44. it.
