  13.  You could have a choke that is stuck open, or you could have some sort of
  14. problem with losing the gas that was in the carb bowl, and have to crank to
  15. refill it.

  17.  The choke operation is easy to verify. Park it hot, let it cool. Take off
  18. the air cleaner and look at the choke plate. Should be straight vertical.
  19. Now open the throttle slightly (use the throttle linkage). The choke plate
  20. should snap shut, or partially so. If it moves slowly, it needs cleaning.
  21. If it doesn't move, its linkage may have come disconnected or the housing
  22. (for water or electrical chokes) may have rotated, it may be nicely gummed
  23. open, etc.

  25.  Some carbs develop gasket leaks which allow the gas in the bowl to drain into
  26. the intake; then you end up with an empty carb (causing a cold starting
  27. problem) and possibly hot starting troubles as well, if it sits for just 
  28. enough time to drain, flooding the intake, but not enough to boil it all
  29. away.

  31.  A dry carb can be checked by working the throttle linkage and observing
  32. the accelerator pump shot. If it squirts once or twice but not after that, 
  33. or not at all, you may deduce that there is not much gas in the carb
  34. (assuming otherwise normal accelerator pump operation).
