- As a participant in a few recent masques, I have a few suggestions:
-
- 1) Start your tech setup earlier than you think. You'll want more time than
- that, even.
-
- 2) In the green room, have ample mirrors, water and STRAWS!!!! Get a bigger
- room, too. Somebody's skirts always get stepped on, and those Klingons are
- always a little antsy before a fight.
-
- 3) Somebody's bound to lose a piece of something. Emergency needles, thread,
- duct tape, hot -- and cool -- glue...
-
- 4) If at all possible, have the tech run-throughs be by appointment some time
- prior to the final arrival prior to the show. I've been at a couple recently
- where the lights and sound were never finished until just before the show
- began, and there were no tech run-throughs for the participants, though we sat
- around in costume and makeup for about two hours. Consequently, one of the
- backstage people tried to bodily move me onto stage when my tape began (I'm
- about 250lbs* -- I'm not moving), rather than at the entrance cue.
-
- Especially for children, having a rehearsal BEFORE the costumes are
- put on will greatly ease the flow, and prevent the kids from shredding the
- costumes while waiting for the rehearsal to finish. Making the rehearsals by
- appointment means I don't have to miss the rest of the con. If you miss your
- time? Well, you snooze, you lose.
-
- 5) Please videotape the show. Otherwise, I never get to see the presentations,
- though being backstage does let me get a better idea as to how the competition
- built their stuff.
-
- (If anyone has a videotape from Windycon, please let me know)
