- To give up even one of legal rights is to give up *all* of our rights.
- Respect for the law must be accepted by both parties, if one party,
- in this case the police, sloppily administers the law then the other party,
- the speeder, must fight it. This is perfectly ethical. If the crime were
- more serious, murder, drug importing, revolutionary activity, and the police
- didn't follow correct procedures, the accused has every right to question
- and challenge the evidence and charges. Thank God we still have these rights.
- These rights are the greatest thing about the United States, IMHO.

- On the previous vain, four years ago I lived in Portland and had a girlfriend
- in Seattle. My friend would drive up for reserve duty and I would go to see
- her. My friend would get very tired and ask me to drive back...well, I was
- usually pretty tired too (grin). One night I was pulling out of a parking
- spot on W. Nickerson, where the road comes down Queen Anne Hill pretty fast,
- and everyone always speeds down it. I saw a car in the far lane, it wasn't
- signalling, and pulled out. The car rammed us in the drivers door and instantly
- two police cars arrive. I'm in shock. She obviously changed lanes without
- looking or signalling. The police charged me with something about illegal
- exiting from a parking space. It was because of our Oregon plates and that
- I wouldn't admit *I* was at fault. I was in shock, I wasn't going to answer
- anything. Anyway, I moved up to Seattle a month later and appearred in court,
- ready to challenge the ticket. The hearing officer dismissed the charges
- against me because the file wasn't there, and I was! None of this, "well, we
- don't have the file here, come back next week." I was free. Best five minutes
- I ever spent in a courtroom.
