- So when *wasn't* the "bucket full"? There isn't a single argument
- against immigration today that I haven't seen in books written
- in the 1970's, the 50's the 20's the 1800's. Every group that has
- ever immigrated to America has fought against that prejudice to
- be taken seriously as "real American's" and then joined with their
- former enemies to try and pull up the ladder. There's no one more
- forgetful than a 2nd+ generation American.
-
- Back in New Jersey, one of the most strident letter writers to
- a local paper is a guy from the John Birch Society. They've
- published several of his letters that could have been lifted from
- 1920's populist literature (and probably were). All about how
- these new people will never become "real Americans" like us. and
- how they will never learn English, never get jobs, never amount
- to anything, will fill our jails and insane asylums etc etc etc.
- That guys name is "Oswelzski"! Only in America could this guy
- get away with this kind of crap without even being reminded that
- under his own rules his father, grandfather or whatever would
- have been refused entry to this country as "undersirable", thereby
- robbing him of his chance to be a "real American".
-
- In the 1940's Bill Mauldin drew a cartoon showing a guy sitting
- in front of a log cabin at the Eastern shore of North America
- as a boat (that looked suspiciously like the Mayflower) pulled
- into the harbor - "More dang immigrants!" he cries "I swear this
- country is getting to a dumping ground for Europe's trash!"
