- I have worked in bookstores for years and am within a couple of
- years of trying to start one of my own. I have read many magazines and
- books written on starting and running small businesses, but the idea of
- starting a bookstore is rarely mentioned. I am already well aware of how
- little money is to be made *working* in a bookstore, but is owning or
- starting a bookstore relatively risky? Is there any data available on
- success/failure rates in this industry? I have a couple more questions,
- too. If I were looking for potential retail space or perhaps an existing
- bookstore to buy, where would the best place to look be? Also, I was
- wondering if any of the big chains sold franchises in the way that fast
- food restaurants do and if those are a good investment or not. I already
- am aware that someone like me with very little capital will have some time
- trying to collect some funds to start something like this from scratch,
- but does anyone know of private (or perhaps public) funds that would be
- especially suited to opening a bookstore? I know that banks are more
- stingy these days and I'm not sure I want to give up control of my
- entreprise to some venture capitalist, although I confess I don't know much
- about that either. Any bibilophiles out there with some capital? Oh
- well, it was worth a try. Thanks in advance.
