  18.    WASHINGTON, Jan. 6  -- For the first time ever, 
  19. American students, teachers and parents will have
  20. access to a comprehensive listing of educational resources in
  21. their local area, as well as throughout the nation.  The "Guidebook
  22. to Excellence: A Directory of Federal Facilities and Other Resources
  23. for Mathematics and Science Education Improvement" was released
  24. today at a White House press conference.
  25.    Copies of the guidebook may be obtained by calling or writing
  26. the contact listed below.
  27.    James D. Watkins, secretary of energy and chairman of the
  28. Federal Coordinating Council for Science, Engineering, and
  29. Technology, Committee on Education and Human Resources (FCCSET-CEHR)
  30. hailed the guidebook as "An impressive achievement in the
  31. government's quest to make the most of its resources, and improve
  32. mathematics, engineering, technology and science education in
  33. America."
  34.    Watkins added, "imagine how useful the guidebook will be.  A
  35. teacher or parent anywhere in the U.S. can now look up those
  36. nearby federal laboratories and other state and regional
  37. facilities that sponsor science and mathematics initiatives, and
  38. obtain the name and phone number of someone who can help.  Using
  39. this directory, students of all ages will be able to take
  40. advantage of the tremendous scientific resources the federal
  41. government has to offer."
  42.    On Nov. 16, 1992, President Bush signed Executive Order 12821
  43. on Improving Mathematics and Science Education in Support of the
  44. National Education Goals, making education part of the mission of
  45. each federal agency and empowering those agencies to utilize
  46. their resources to improve science and mathematics education in
  47. America.  The Guidebook to Excellence enables teachers, parents
  48. and students to take advantage of the federal laboratories,
  49. scientists and equipment made available by the Executive Order.
