  25. Despite Canadian consumption, U.S. tobacco production is in a 
  26. long-term decline.  In 1982 dollars, tobacco manufacturing dropped 
  27. from $9,561 million in 1980 to $3,080 million in 1989.  Per
  28. capita consumption dropped from 7.9 lb/yr to 5.7 lb/yr over the
  29. same period.

  31. U.S. smoking rates have declined rapidly, too.  In 1979, 43% of
  32. 18-25 year olds, and 37% of those over 25, smoked.  By 1991, this
  33. dropped to 32% and 29%, respectively.

  35. Because the U.S. anti-smoking business has been going for a long
  36. time, 1980s numbers hide a large overall drop during the
  37. 1960s and 1970s.  1970 tobacco consumption was 9.7 lb/yr per
  38. capita, 70% more than in 1989.
