  24. I don't know about "cleaner."  They probably produce less soot, a
  25. particulate part of "smog," but I'd be careful about extrapolating that
  26. they are "better" for the environment.  I'd say a considerable amount
  27. of energy was burned (creating its own polutants) in the manufacture,
  28. packaging, transportation, and resale of those logs... almost certainly
  29. more than was burned in the chainsaw and pickup used to deliver a load
  30. of firewood.

  43. It depends what you want out of your fireplace.  For the smell, the
  44. "atmosphere," the solid sense of accomplishment you get cleaning out
  45. the ashes, ie, for the "rustic" feel, go with wood.  If all you want is
  46. a cat TV, burn the store-bought logs.  For the maximum in convenience
  47. and "clean" burning, have gas logs installed.  For warming your house,
  48. close the flue and turn up the heater, or install a wood-burning stove.
