- I don't know about "cleaner." They probably produce less soot, a
- particulate part of "smog," but I'd be careful about extrapolating that
- they are "better" for the environment. I'd say a considerable amount
- of energy was burned (creating its own polutants) in the manufacture,
- packaging, transportation, and resale of those logs... almost certainly
- more than was burned in the chainsaw and pickup used to deliver a load
- of firewood.

- It depends what you want out of your fireplace. For the smell, the
- "atmosphere," the solid sense of accomplishment you get cleaning out
- the ashes, ie, for the "rustic" feel, go with wood. If all you want is
- a cat TV, burn the store-bought logs. For the maximum in convenience
- and "clean" burning, have gas logs installed. For warming your house,
- close the flue and turn up the heater, or install a wood-burning stove.
