  28. Quantum Books strongly objects to the above post, and asks whether
  29. it ought not to be considered an inappropriate use of this newsgroup.

  31. Quantum Books has been taken to task in the past over postings to 
  32. misc.books.technical which have been construed as overly commercial; but 
  33. nothing we have ever done can compare to this post for blatant hype.

  35. Notwithstanding the fact that Quantum Books posted a simple, informative 
  36. announcement of the new NeXTSTEP book some weeks ago already (Dec. 18), 
  37. this post was filled with over two pages of text devoted to vacuous and 
  38. redundant blurbs about the book and its authors, hyping of the publisher's 
  39. "imprint", and full-blown soliciting of orders.  This amounts to what we 
  40. perceive as a flagrant disregard of the norms which have been 
  41. established for this newsgroup, and we feel particularly bound to point 
  42. this out.

  44. As might be of some interest to readers of this group, what makes this 
  45. posting further unwelcome is its broadcasting of a direct betrayal by a 
  46. publisher of its relationship with retail booksellers.  We support 
  47. Springer-Verlag by stocking their books, and they in turn pull the rug 
  48. out from under us by soliciting orders directly.  We do not believe 
  49. their legitimate means of maintaining marketing and editorial presence 
  50. should include abusing Net News in this way.
