- Quantum Books strongly objects to the above post, and asks whether
- it ought not to be considered an inappropriate use of this newsgroup.
-
- Quantum Books has been taken to task in the past over postings to
- misc.books.technical which have been construed as overly commercial; but
- nothing we have ever done can compare to this post for blatant hype.
-
- Notwithstanding the fact that Quantum Books posted a simple, informative
- announcement of the new NeXTSTEP book some weeks ago already (Dec. 18),
- this post was filled with over two pages of text devoted to vacuous and
- redundant blurbs about the book and its authors, hyping of the publisher's
- "imprint", and full-blown soliciting of orders. This amounts to what we
- perceive as a flagrant disregard of the norms which have been
- established for this newsgroup, and we feel particularly bound to point
- this out.
-
- As might be of some interest to readers of this group, what makes this
- posting further unwelcome is its broadcasting of a direct betrayal by a
- publisher of its relationship with retail booksellers. We support
- Springer-Verlag by stocking their books, and they in turn pull the rug
- out from under us by soliciting orders directly. We do not believe
- their legitimate means of maintaining marketing and editorial presence
- should include abusing Net News in this way.
