  21. FREE NIKOS MAZIOTIS: RECOGNISE 
  22. THE RIGHT TO REFUSE MILITARY SERVICE
  23. War Resisters' International, and its affiliates in over 30 countries
  24. around the world, call for the immediate release of Nikos Maziotis,
  25. the Greek conscientious objector facing trial at a military court in
  26. Thessaloniki on 12 January.  Nikos -- currently on hunger strike in
  27. jail in Thessaloniki -- was arrested in October last year, following
  28. an earlier arrest and four-month spell in jail in 1991.

  30. Nikos' particular "crime" is said to be insulting the Greek army by
  31. describing it as an institution of violence.  Having already been
  32. punished for refusing to serve in the army, he is now being
  33. punished for explaining his reason for this refusal.

  35. War Resisters' International and its affiliates work for the abolition
  36. of all armies which we regard as institutions of violence.  Greece, as
  37. the only country in the European Community which makes no real
  38. provision for conscientious objectors to military service, has a
  39. system of military conscription which violates the consciences of all
  40. those who object to being trained to kill.  It drives young men into
  41. exile and into either injuring themselves or feigning madness to
  42. obtain medical exemption.  Conditions within the Greek army are
  43. so unpleasant that the authorities fear that, if they offered an
  44. alternative civilian service for objectors, too many people would
  45. seek objector status.

  47. Since November, Nikos Maziotis has been on hunger strike.  His
  48. whole being is in revolt against war and the military system and he
  49. is prepared to risk his health, his freedom and even his life to
  50. express this.  It is horrific that a country which gave the world
  51. concepts such as democracy and philosophy should today treat its
  52. young thinkers in this appalling way.
