- FOOD LION EATS CHILD LABOR
-
- Food Lion, Belgian-owned but headquartered in Salisbury, N.C., is
- the nation's fastest-growing food chain with nearly 1,000 stores
- and warehouses in 14 states. It has almost 50,000 full-and-part-
- time employees, many of them teenagers.
-
- The Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) has charged Food
- Lion with violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act on behalf of
- the 183 current employees, seeking $194 million in back wages.
-
- The union is also expected to charge the company with 1,400
- violations of child labor law, 1,200 of which involve teenagers
- working around hazardous equipment such as meat slicers and
- package bailers.
-
- Al Zack, speaking for the union said, "Unions lobbied for [child
- labor laws] and they will go into disrepair" if outfits like Food
- Lion flout them.
