  23. This is quite misleading. RU486 has more side effects, more
  24. contraindications,
  25. and is "less effective" that surgical (vacuum aspiration) abortions. In
  26. France, any history of heart disease is considered a contraindication.
  27. Evidence is mounting that (as for hormonal birth control pills) smoking
  28. should be considered a serious contraindication.

  30. The RU486/Prostaglandin process takes longer than a surgical abortion,
  31. and involves pain and bleeding for 7-12 days, longer than for a surgical
  32. abortion. 3-4 patients per hundred experience "severe" bleeding or pain
  33. requiring further medical treatment.

  35. The drug has a slightly higher risk of "partial abortion" than a surgical
  36. abortion. A "partial" abortion requires a follow up surgical abortion.
  37. This is a very slight difference. 96% success for RU 486 v. 97% for vacuum
  38. aspiration.

  40. RU486 also has a higher (but still low) rate of fatal complications:

  42. 1:100,000 for RU486/Prostaglandin abortion
  43. 1:250,000 for vacuum aspiration abortion
  44. 1:14,300 normal childbirth
  45. 1:3,000 illegal abortion
  46.  
  47. Some of these fatalities can be blamed on the type of prostaglandin used,
  48. rather than the RU486 itself.

  50. RU 486 is a very useful new drug, and promises to make safe abortions
  51. more accessible than ever before. The drug is not perfect, but it
  52. stands on its own merits, and does not need misleading endorsements.
