BK>I have had some discussions with your colleague Paul Chandler
BK>already. I am very interested in the idea of making comms as
BK>accessible to students as word processing by networking and
BK>using the POINT idea as you have done.
Paul has been an inspirational help with Jeff Clement at getting this up off the ground.
BK>I will be teaching computing next year at Paralowie R-12 in
BK>South Oz (new assignment for me) and I have just found out that
BK>they have a Novell network setup there but having some
BK>difficulties with it. So I should be able to do something useful
BK>there with the help of K12.*
Say, where is Paralowie. Looked but couldnt find it in my Atlas.
What are their problems? The mail stuff ran the best over the network here... any problems we had were of a more technical nature that were readily worked out.
BK>My question is a rather general one. I have had no experience in
BK>running a Novell network but a *lot* of people say:
BK> "(ibm) networks are not easy"
BK>Is that true? Why is it that they are not easy? What are the main
BK>sorts of things that go wrong with them? What is the best way to
BK>learn how to run them without muckups etc. etc.??
Welcome to Novell! I got started on our network with a weeks notice and experimenting at the start of Jan 1992 so I know how you feel.
Novell is fine if you coped and understand how Dos works. It is a good network and the Ministry of Ed in victoria took out a kind of site licence arrangement to encourage its use. It is very powerfull and that is where some users get tangled up. Just be clear about what you want it to do and get some good advice about how to do it.. dont take ANYTHING as gospel till you try it yourself. Does the school backup everything on a tape drive or have individual student access. Dont be frightened about it. Bernard
Holkner and Mark Dods run a Education Network network (sic) that also has an ednet
(fidonet) type echo for discussions here in victoria so with this mail system on our network, I am really plugged into what is
happening and have good advice only a key stroke away!
Best wishes for 1993.
