- I recently (3 months ago) was given a laptop PC at work, in the hope that
- I'd do some work for free at home in the evenings. For the next 3 months,
- I struggled with MSDOS and Demacs, encountering the kinds of problems that
- have been mentioned here, (file locking, Japanese times, occasional
- freezes, no shell mode, etc, etc).
-
- I eventually found the perfect solution to all these problems - I got
- myself a copy of Linux, a free UN*X implementation for PCs. Now I have GNU
- Emacs 18.59, GCC, lex, yacc, and everything else I could ever wish for
- (almost). Emacs even appears to run faster under Linux than Demacs ever
- did under MSDOS!
-
- The point I'm trying to make is that if all you want to do is use the PC to
- edit files while away from your UN*X workstation, then it may be better to
- abandon MSDOS altogether and get Linux. It worked for me.
-
- Possible drawbacks with Linux:
-
- o It requires at least a 386 to run.
-
- o It gobbles around 50Mb of disk space if you want to install a
- complete system (X11, TeX, gcc, Emacs, etc).
-
- See the FAQs in comp.os.linux for further details. I recommend getting the
- Soft Landing System (SLS) package, since that gives you almost all of the GNU
- stuff in a ready-to-run form.
-
- I hope this is useful to somebody. I just wish I'd discovered Linux 3
- months ago...
