- Hello,
-
- I'm having some difficulty with quotas and I'm certain there is someone
- out there who could enlighten me (or point me on the path to true
- enlightenment - re: the zen of disk quotas).
-
- I'm running ultrix 4.2a on a DECsystem 5000. Upon creating a few
- accounts today it appeared that disk quotas were not being set as they
- should be (we run an addusers program which, among other things, sets
- the quota for a user). We `inherited' this addusers program which has
- worked fine so let's leave this out of the question. At any rate, a
- `quota' on these users indicated none.
-
- A quick and dirty rtfm of repquota and quotacheck lead me to run these
- little ditties which seems to have corrected the problems and given
- quotas to those accounts mentioned above. So, here are my questions;
-
- 1) Can quotas get screwed up? And if so how? Nemeth, Snyder and
- Seebass indicate that quota information can become degraded after long
- periods of time and/or abrupt system halts and crashes. We've had
- neither, to my knowledge. Whaddaya think?
-
- 2) How do I interpret the results of quotacheck? This seems to
- have repaired the problem of accounts without quotas - a subsequent
- `quota' on the account shows quotas where they were not before. Has the
- utility _really_ ben successful in finding accounts with no quota and
- imposing a quota? Here are partial results of one pass of quotacheck;
-
- # quotacheck -v /usr/users
- *** Check quotas for /dev/rrz1f
- operator fixed: inodes (old 599, new 600) blocks (old 8810, new 8812)
- ccgwt fixed: inodes (old 1767, new 1771) blocks (old 108260, new 108260)
- pypm fixed: inodes (old 74, new 75) blocks (old 2710, new 2710)
- csplr fixed: inodes (old 284, new 290) blocks (old 8518, new 8518)
- csre fixed: inodes (old 11, new 12) blocks (old 76, new 76)
-
- 3) How do I interpret the results of repquota? Specifically, what
- does `--' vs. `+-' mean? Here are partial results of one pass of
- repquota;
-
- # repquota -a
- Block limits File limits
- User used soft hard warn used soft hard warn
- operator -- 39120 0 0 0 539 0 0 0
- cclrl +- 13999 13900 14000 3 670 0 0 3
- pymbr +- 4761 1900 2000 3 353 0 0 3
-
- 4) What might you recommend as a procedure to check the status of
- all users' quotas and to assure (or be warned) of accounts without
- quotas and/or with quotas outside specified values?
-
- Thanks in advance for comments/recommendations/pointers.
