- We use the pathworks tcp/ip (and the analagous lanman 2.X over tcp/ip) for about
- half our pcs accessing servers, and have done so for better than a year. In
- answer to your specific questions:
-
- - tcp/ip and DECNET are transports for the pathworks utilities, and most
- (but not quite all) utilities work as well over tcp/ip as DECNET
- (Note however that the DECNET functions ncp, ndu etc dont work)
-
- - future: my crystal ball is no better than yours. It is worth noting
- that the pathworks for osf/1 on al;pha is delayed until late 1993,
- according to my DEC salesman. It is highly probable however that third
- parties will fill the void if necessary (as they have done for sun)
-
- - if anything I find less problem with the TCP/IP transport than the DECNET
- transport (the transport is lanman tcp/ip originally from HP via 3COM)
-
- - we certainly find it more open than DECNET, our pcs now mount os/2
- servers, ms-dos servers, VMS servers, and Ultrix servesr, with HP servers
- soon to be added (I hope). Further this puts most of our pcs on a
- tcp/ip stack for their network utilities (we can now deploy smtp mail
- and netnews easily on the pcs). Finally the tcp/ip stack is routable,
- which the nbp and netbuei stacks really arent, so we can establish a
- routed tcp/ip environment over the whole corporation
-
- - obviously we are an installation, with approximately 200 pcs connected to
- an environment of about 30 vms and 30 ultrix machines backed up by two
- opticalstorage systems accessible to the pc over the pathworks tcp/ip
- environment
-
- In short, I think this is a very smart thing to do!
