-
- Some specifics, most of which make me feel better about ESIX's survival
- (notwithstanding my other opinions on the surplus number of R4 vendors):
-
- - The new owner of ESIX is the James River Group of Minneapolis, which has
- been best known so far as the maker of Ice-Ten and Ice-TCP. All ties to
- Everex are to be severed.
-
- - My contact at ESIX called the purchase a welcome event. "We won't be
- constrained by Everex anymore".
-
- - No layoffs or staff changes, according to my contact, though there may
- be some re-organization at the bean-counter levels.
-
- - Now that the financial uncertainly is over, ESIX has resumed its
- committment to upgrade its current 4.0.4 UNIX product to a newer USL
- release. ESIX is looking at Destiny (4.2), however it is possible the
- company will bypass 4.2 in favour of 4.3, which is to include
- multi-processor support. ESIX is said to be "just a month or two away"
- from getting the 4.3 code.
-
- - The company is also looking to reduce the number of packages it sells in
- future releases. That is, they would to go to an approach more like Dell's
- -- one package with everything bundled. The ballpark price being kicked
- around is $1,800 (list) for a package of this kind based on 4.2 or 4.3.
-
- - In keeping with the products sold by its new owners, it's likely that
- future versions of ESIX will have built-in support for Ice-Ten and Ice-TCP.

- What's with all this multimedia stuff? Most vendors can't get *one* done right.
