- I am responsible for the software development environment for a small
- company. We operate "way too many" PC's on a tcp/ip network served by
- an ISC 3.0 file server (50 MHz DX2, 1.8GB SCSI, 16MB, etc., etc.). My
- boss has complained about this particular Unix (compared to his beloved
- Zilog (!) system. But for all of it's shortcomings, it has performed
- it's job well. I am now planning an upgrade, with the current machine
- being relegated to a hot standby. Now for the questions:
-
- I have been reading USENET and the various publications. I have the
- luxury of acting or waiting since I have a working environment. I would
- appreciate anyones comments and suggestions on these questions:
-
- 1. Considering the obsolete, but functional (and stable) state of ISC 3.0,
- is the 4.2 release (say, Consensus) worth the effort of switching, or
- should I wait a while?
-
- 2. Should I consider EISA hardware? Or would I be safer with the fastest
- possible tried-and-true ISA? Is it true that ISA implementations are
- limited to 16MB of RAM? (>16 MB is my prime motivation here).
-
- 3. I've read that NFS on the 4.X implementations is slow. NFS is essential
- to me, so i'm concerned.
-
- 4. Is software portability improved (or at least good) on 4.X. Porting
- "Internet Freebies" to my ISC has been, at best, a nightmare. What
- "standard" variety of UNIX is 4.2 most like? (In other words, if
- there's not a config option for Concensus 4.2... what similar machine
- should I use?
-
- 5. Do any of the PC-CLOSE solutions have good enough support for MS-DOS
- that I could even dream of forcibly replacing any of my engineers MS-DOS
- machines. I have worked with VP/ix, and consider it to be an example of
- MS-DOS support that wouldn't cut it as a "this is all you've got"
- replacement. I'm looking for a UNIX platform that would let me wean
- the developers from MS-DOS. (This question is optional!)
-
- 6. As a software developer I hate to ask this, but is it "too buggy"? I
- am a big proponent of UNIX and want to move forward. (I want 4.X to
- be the UNIX that really does take over the MS-DOS marketplace). But...
- i'll be quite unpopular with my colleagues if I upgrade them to something
- worse than we have now.
-
- Sorry to be a whiner. But I haven't yet read anything that helps me answer
- these questions.
