  22. Did you massage /etc/shadow as well?  The rule of thumb is:

  24.     Entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow should match one-for-one
  25.  
  26. Beware that, in the grand Unix tradition, the routine that parses /etc/shadow
  27. is a harsh god:  if you don't get the number of colons exactly right it
  28. won't like you.
