- I'm having a problem with an Ultrix system whose system load is going through
- the roof on occasion, preventing logins or rsh's, but not actually crashing.
- I'm working on tracking down the source of the problem, and want to have
- another UNIX box catch this condition when it happens by running a cron job
- that periodically checks on its health. The question is what tools to use to
- test whether the machine has gone off the deep end. A ping is low-level
- enough that it is successful even when the machine has gone haywire. A rsh
- will time out if a machine is not running, but will just hang forever with
- this machine when its having problems. Is there a way to set a timeout period
- for rsh so that I could use that in a script to check the other machine? Are
- there other suggestions for tools to use to just check and see if the machine
- is responding?
