- The version of X11 server that runs on an IBM Xstation is controlled by the
- software Xstation manager (x_st_mgr) that runs on the RS/6000 host. The
- Xstation manager supports X11R3 and X11R4 in versions prior to 1.4 (released in
- December 1992). The Xstations 120 and 130 can run either the R3 or the R4
- server. The R4 server requires a little more memory in the Xstation, but
- it also runs faster. Changing from one to the other is a simple configuration
- change using SMIT (just define a new network type that uses the R4 bootfile,
- bootfile1, and then change the characteristics of the Xstation to use the
- new network type).
-
- The new version of the Xstation manager (1.4), when installed with AIXwindows
- 1.2.3, supports the X11R5 server. To move to this level, you must update
- AIX and AIXwindows to the newest levels in addition to the new Xstation manager
- code. I do not have experience, as yet, with running the R5 server on the
- Xstations.
